Ten Hag Agrees with Rangnick on Manchester United's Deep-Seated Issues
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has echoed former interim boss Ralf Rangnick's sentiment that the club required "open-heart surgery" to address its longstanding issues. Rangnick, who managed United for seven months, had asserted that minor changes wouldn't suffice to resolve the club’s problems. Ten Hag, who took over in April 2022, concurs with this assessment.

Under Rangnick, United finished sixth in the Premier League, winning only 11 out of 29 matches. He concluded that substantial and comprehensive changes were necessary. Ten Hag, who recently extended his contract by a year, acknowledged the complexity of the task, stating, "Rangnick was absolutely right. It is a thorough, very complex operation."

The club has seen significant changes off the pitch since Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 27.7% stake in December. Key appointments include Omar Berrada, Dan Ashworth, Jason Wilcox, and Christopher Vivell at board level. Additionally, £50 million has been committed to upgrading the training ground.

On the transfer front, forward Joshua Zirkzee and defender Leny Yoro have recently joined from Bologna and Lille, respectively. Ten Hag has also expressed interest in Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt, a player he previously tried to sign.

Forward Jadon Sancho, who last played for United in August 2023 and spent the latter half of the season on loan at Dortmund, is back in contention for selection. Ten Hag emphasized that everyone can make mistakes, indicating a fresh start for Sancho.

United recently triumphed 2-0 over Rangers in a friendly at Murrayfield, with goals from Amad Diallo and Joe Hugill. Ten Hag praised the team's performance, noting improved standards and a more proactive approach.

The Dutch manager remains optimistic yet realistic about the challenges ahead, underscoring the need for further squad depth to navigate a demanding season.
