Canadian women's soccer team successfully advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics

Despite a six-point deduction due to a drone scandal, the Canadian women's soccer team successfully advanced to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics.

In the recently concluded match between Canada and Colombia, defender Gilles scored the winning goal in the 61st minute from a Fleming cross, securing second place in the group and a spot in the quarterfinals.

Canada will face Germany on Saturday. Previously, Canada was docked six points by FIFA for using a drone to scout New Zealand's training session before a match. Although Canada appealed the penalty, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the decision on Wednesday.

Additionally, Canadian head coach Bev Priestman, team analyst Joseph Lombardi, who operated the drone, and assistant coach Jasmine Mander were all banned by FIFA for one year. Following the drone incident, Priestman voluntarily stepped down from coaching duties and was relieved of her position by the Canadian team until the end of the Olympics. Interim head coach Andy Spencer took over Priestman’s role to lead the team in the competition.

Canada won their first group match against New Zealand, but the six-point deduction left them with a negative three points, putting them on the brink of elimination. However, in a thrilling comeback against host nation France, Canada won 2-1 with Gilles scoring a decisive goal in the 102nd minute, keeping their hopes of advancing alive.

In the Tokyo Olympics, Canada eliminated the USA in the semifinals and won the gold medal by defeating Sweden in a penalty shootout in the final.
