Brentford Secure Sepp van den Berg in £25m Deal from Liverpool

Brentford has successfully signed Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool in a deal worth up to £25 million. The 22-year-old joins the Bees on a five-year contract, turning down several other clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen. The initial fee is set at £20 million, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons, and Liverpool retains a 17.5% sell-on clause.
Thomas Frank, Brentford's manager, praised van den Berg as a "great signing" for the club. He highlighted the defender's speed, game-reading ability, and composure in both build-up play and defensive actions. Van den Berg's character and fit with Brentford's playing style were also noted as significant factors in his acquisition.
Van den Berg, who made 33 Bundesliga appearances on loan at Mainz last season, originally joined Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in 2019. Despite limited first-team opportunities at Liverpool, he gained valuable experience during an 18-month loan at Preston North End. Brentford is also close to signing 18-year-old Brazilian winger Gustavo Nunes from Gremio, further strengthening their squad.
