Hajime Moriyasu: We weakened the opponent through continuous attacks
After leading the team to a 5-0 away victory over Bahrain in the second round of the 2026 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, Japan's head coach Hajime Moriyasu gave an interview with DAZN.

Q: The team's attacking rhythm in the first half seemed a bit difficult to grasp. Do you think you encountered any difficulties playing away?
Moriyasu: Of course, with the home crowd cheering them on, I believe they were able to use that to their advantage in this environment. In such difficult conditions, thanks to the players' resilience, we managed to score. After that, I think we controlled the tempo. The players were well-prepared for this challenging away match and fought through the tough moments. I believe they performed very well.
Q: The team's attacking rhythm seemed to pick up in the second half. Can you share, as much as you're able to, what instructions you gave during halftime?
Moriyasu: First, I told them to maintain our rhythm. When the opponent had full stamina, they were able to respond to our attacks. However, through sustained pressure, we were able to wear down their stamina and concentration, and I think the players' persistence paid off.
Q: Many fans came to the stadium and offered tremendous support for Japan. Can you share a few words with those fans?
Moriyasu: As you mentioned, we won the match today, and the players put in their efforts with the mindset of dedicating this victory to all Japanese people and fans, both at home and around the world. First of all, winning is, of course, a great thing, and I’d like to thank everyone watching the match late at night. They continued to cheer for us and gave us strength, and because of that, our players were able to perform so well. I’m truly grateful to all the fans supporting us. There are even tougher battles ahead, and I hope everyone can keep fighting alongside us. Thank you!
Q: It was a great match, thank you for your hard work!
Moriyasu: Thank you as well!
