No Public Funding for Manchester United's Stadium Plans, Confirms Mayor

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has confirmed that no public funds will be used for Manchester United's ambitious plans to either build a new 100,000-seat stadium or redevelop the existing Old Trafford. While the club’s owners deliberate on their £2 billion options, Burnham emphasized that any stadium upgrades will be privately funded by the club.
The redevelopment could involve creating a "mixed-use" area, including new transport links and housing. However, moving a freight rail terminal behind Old Trafford is crucial for the expansion. While public money might be used for infrastructure improvements related to this move, the stadium itself will not receive taxpayer funding.
Former Manchester United star Gary Neville, part of a taskforce evaluating the stadium's future, stressed the importance of a world-class facility and the broader development of the surrounding area. Despite the complexities involved, the goal remains to establish a premier stadium that benefits both the club and local residents.
