Edu Resigns as Arsenal Sporting Director

Edu has stepped down from his role as Arsenal's sporting director, a position he held since November 2022 after initially rejoining the club as technical director in 2019. The 46-year-old Brazilian, who previously played for Arsenal between 2001 and 2005, winning two league titles, expressed that the decision to resign was challenging yet necessary for pursuing new opportunities. In a statement, he conveyed his enduring affection for the club and its supporters, wishing them continued success.
During his tenure, Edu was instrumental in several key developments at Arsenal, including the hiring of manager Mikel Arteta, under whom the club won the FA Cup in 2020. Despite not securing major trophies since, Edu has been credited with helping to reshape Arsenal into serious title contenders, particularly as they finished as Premier League runners-up in the last two seasons. Notable player acquisitions during his time included Martin Ødegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, and Declan Rice, who have all become integral to the team's success.
Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke acknowledged Edu's contributions, stating that change is part of the club's evolution and expressing gratitude for his dedication. Following Edu's departure, Arsenal is also set to appoint James King as their new director of football operations, marking further structural changes within the club's management. The Gunners aim to maintain their focus on strategies for winning major trophies as they move forward under a reshaped leadership team.
