Amorim: "Right now, Guardiola is much stronger than me; I am very confident about my new club."

After Sporting CP’s 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League Matchday 4, Sporting's head coach Rúben Amorim shared his thoughts in a post-match interview.
Reflecting on the impressive win, Amorim said, “This is as good as it gets. We had some luck that we didn’t always have in the past. The first half was very challenging for us; we struggled with ball control, and our players were filled with tension. But after scoring the first goal just before halftime, our performance improved. Of course, the two goals at the start of the second half helped a lot—they changed the flow of the game. The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible. I feel like this is the perfect way to say goodbye.”
When asked about this being a fitting farewell, Amorim said, “I think it was destined to be, because the first half was very tough for us, and we were extremely lucky. In the second half, scoring twice in the opening minutes changed everything. Everything seemed to fall in place for us—it was a beautiful night, a wonderful moment. I think everyone here deserves to share in this, from the board to the fans. Four years ago, we started from a very low point, so today is an amazing day.”
Discussing any halftime adjustments, Amorim explained, “We had a bit of luck since there weren’t many tactical changes, and the goals came so quickly. But I think we slightly adjusted our pressing in the second half. We tightened up more centrally, letting Trincão focus on marking Kovačić. But once we were 3-1 up, it carried us through to the end.”
When asked if he would consider bringing Trincão to Manchester United, Amorim responded, “No, no, I can’t joke about this now. Leaving here is difficult for me. If I start joking about these things, it could lead to trouble. This is my city, my country, so I want to respect it. Trincão should stay here until the season ends; after that, he might have other plans.”
Regarding the fans’ tribute to him, Amorim said, “Yes, it moved me a little. I think this victory will help me. I’m ready to face new challenges calmly. It’s been a wonderful night. I love these fans. I grew up as a Benfica supporter and played for Benfica, but these fans are incredible. It’s been a beautiful journey. Now, after Sunday, I think I’ll start a new chapter with a new club. We need to approach these teams differently; we can’t defend like this. So, as a coach, I need to improve, but I’m very happy—it’s been a wonderful night.”
Finally, on his duel with Pep Guardiola, Amorim commented, “This wasn’t my first encounter with Guardiola; two years ago, they beat us 5-0 here. So this game felt like preparation before the battle. Right now, he’s much stronger than I am, but I’m confident about my new club. We’ll start from a lower level, if I can say that. We’ll raise the standards of both the team and the club.”
