From Biblical Roots to Stamford Bridge: FC Noah's Remarkable European Journey

Armenian side FC Noah are set to make history as they prepare for their Conference League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The club, established in 2017 as Artsakh before rebranding in 2019, has experienced a meteoric rise under the ownership of IT entrepreneur Vardges Vardanyan, who took control in August 2023 and immediately initiated an ambitious transformation of the team.

The club's remarkable journey to this stage included an unprecedented qualifying campaign, where they were the only team from the initial 50 first-round qualifiers to reach the tournament proper. Their path has been marked by dramatic moments, including an 88th-minute winner with ten men in their play-off match, and a goalkeeper scoring against AEK Athens with a long clearance. Under Portuguese manager Rui Mota, who arrived as part of Vardanyan's overhaul, the team underwent a massive reconstruction, signing 16 players in the summer alone.

The club's name draws inspiration from the biblical figure Noah, whose ark is said to have landed on Mount Ararat, visible from Armenia's capital Yerevan. This religious connection holds special significance in Armenia, the world's first country to adopt Christianity as its official religion. The team has formed an unexpected alliance with Portuguese legend Luis Figo, who serves as an advisor and supporter of the club's development. Despite their nomadic existence across various Armenian cities and stadiums, FC Noah is now building a 20,000-capacity stadium in Echmiatsin, symbolizing their ambition to establish a lasting presence in European football. Their current Conference League campaign, including a win against Mlada Boleslav and a narrow loss to Rapid Vienna, has already exceeded expectations and captured the imagination of Armenian football fans.
