Dortmund's sporting director Kehl’s contract renewal remains uncertain

According to *Ruhr Nachrichten*, Borussia Dortmund's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, is not guaranteed a contract extension with the club, and the situation remains uncertain. Initially, this appeared straightforward earlier in the summer when Kehl and Lars Ricken exchanged ideas, but other priorities, such as forming a new coaching staff and restructuring the team, took precedence. Since the season began, there have been multiple discussions, and Dortmund’s inconsistent performance has only added complexity.

Kehl is known for his unyielding negotiation skills, extensive network, and impeccable reputation. Within the club, he has been thorough across various areas, expanding the medical department and bringing in specialists in fields from psychology to nutrition. He has also strengthened connections between the youth and professional teams.

In the new contract, Kehl might seek to clearly define his responsibilities. Last year, he lost an internal competition to become Dortmund’s new general manager, and the appointment of Sven Mislintat indicated that the club did not fully endorse Kehl’s performance. Nevertheless, he accepted these decisions in the club's best interest.
