In a controversial stance, Turkish football club Ankaragucu has come to the defense of their former president Faruk Koca, who received a prison sentence for physically assaulting a referee during a match. The court in Ankara handed down a three-year and seven-month sentence to Koca for "intentionally wounding a public official," along with an additional suspended sentence for making threats and violating sports-related violence laws.

The incident, which occurred in December 2023 following a 1-1 draw with Rizespor, saw Koca punch referee Halil Umut Meler in the face, resulting in a fractured eye socket. The assault didn't end there, as three other individuals proceeded to kick the referee while he was on the ground. The severity of the incident led the Turkish Football Federation to suspend all football activities in the country for a week, impose a permanent ban on Koca, and fine Ankaragucu two million lira (£54,000), along with ordering them to play five home games behind closed doors.

Despite the court's ruling, Ankaragucu's current chairman Ismail Mert Firat has taken a controversial stance by defending Koca's actions. In a statement, Firat claimed it was "impossible to interpret the sentence with good intentions" and argued that no "disgraceful crime" had been committed. The club emphasized Koca's positive contributions to Turkish football during his three-year presidency, labeling him a "legend" and suggesting that his subsequent resignation and public apology should have been considered as mitigating factors. The case remains ongoing as all four defendants, including Koca, are expected to appeal the court's decision, with Koca remaining free until the higher court rules on the appeal.
