Canadian Soccer Rocked by Pre-Olympic Drone Surveillance Scandal Investigation

An independent investigation has revealed a troubling pattern of unauthorized surveillance within Canadian soccer, culminating in the controversial drone incident at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The probe, conducted by law firm Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark, found that members of Canada's women's coaching staff had raised objections multiple times between 2022 and 2024 regarding the use of drones to monitor opposition training sessions.
The scandal has led to significant repercussions, including the departure of women's national team coach Beverly Priestman, who was initially suspended following the incident where coaching staff used drones to spy on New Zealand's training session during the Olympics. The investigation confirmed that two women's national team coaches had engaged in "improper surveillance" before the Paris Olympics, though no evidence suggested similar activities during the Tokyo 2020 Games where Canada won gold. Importantly, the report clarified that no Canadian players viewed any of the drone footage.
The fallout has prompted Canada Soccer to implement widespread reforms, including new reporting mechanisms for unethical behavior and enhanced education regarding the organization's code of conduct. Additionally, the investigation has expanded to include disciplinary proceedings against former men's team coach John Herdman for potential code violations during his tenure from 2018 to 2023. Current men's team coach Jesse Marsch has explicitly prohibited any surveillance practices, marking a clear departure from previous leadership. Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue acknowledged the incident as symptomatic of "an unacceptable culture and insufficient oversight," pledging to rebuild trust in the federation.
