Lazio
The Romans have secured their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League, but they need just one point from their remaining two group matches to ensure a direct spot in the Round of 16. Currently, the Eagles are tied with Spain's Atletico for first place in the standings, holding 16 points—five more than the trio of clubs occupying positions 8 through 10: Rangers, Tottenham, and FCSB.
Marco Baroni's side started the tournament with four consecutive victories—3:0 against Kyiv's Dynamo, 4:1 over Nice, 2:0 against Twente, and 2:1 against Porto. Few would have anticipated that Lazio would face challenges in their home match against relatively weak Bulgarian side Ludogorets, yet they couldn't clinch victory, despite dominating possession—finishing 0:0. However, they quickly rectified this slip-up with a 3:1 away win against Ajax in Amsterdam.
Overall, Lazio has been performing well domestically. In the Round of 16 of the Coppa Italia, they defeated Napoli and will now face Inter in the quarterfinals. In Serie A, the Biancocelesti currently sit fourth, trailing Atalanta by four points, Inter by eight, and Napoli by 11, while holding a two-point cushion over draw specialists Juventus. The previous calendar year ended for Lazio with a home draw against Atalanta, and the new one began with a 2:0 loss in the derby against Roma. In their next match, the Eagles somewhat unexpectedly dropped points against Como, but last weekend they secured a 3:0 away victory against Verona.
Real Sociedad
While Lazio was winning at the start of the tournament, the Basques managed only one victory in their first four matches, narrowly overcoming Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv on neutral territory. Before that, La Real drew with Nice, who have struggled throughout the group stage with just two points to their name (only Kyiv's Dynamo has fewer), and inexplicably lost at home to Anderlecht. In their fourth match, they suffered another loss, this time 1:2 to Czech side Viktoria, conceding a decisive goal late in the game.
As the year progressed, Real Sociedad gradually found their rhythm, winning two consecutive home matches against Ajax (2:0) and the aforementioned Dynamo (3:0). These victories significantly improved the Basques' position in the standings. They currently share the 11th to 13th places with Ajax and Bodo/Glimt, just one point shy of the eighth-placed team. One of La Real's two remaining matches is almost guaranteed to be a win (a home game against Greek side PAOK), but this may not be enough for a top-8 finish, so they must strive to secure points in Rome.
After the victory against Ajax, La Real won four more consecutive matches, but at the end of the year, they dropped points at home against Las Palmas and succumbed to a 0:2 defeat in Vigo against Celta before the winter break. The new year began with a series of three wins, two of which were in the Copa del Rey against modest Ponferradina and Rayo Vallecano. In the meantime, the Txuri-urdin secured a significant victory over Villarreal, but last weekend they narrowly lost away to Valencia, one of the league's weakest teams that is just starting to revive following a managerial change. As a result, Real Sociedad sits in seventh place in La Liga, trailing Mallorca by two points and the European competition zone.

Lazio vs Real Sociedad Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
Lazio have a good record against Real Sociedad and have won the only match that has been played between the two teams. Real Sociedad have never won an official game against Lazio in a major European competition.
Lazio have won only one of their last 13 matches against opponents from Spain in all competitions and have lost six of their last seven such games.
Real Sociedad are winless in their last eight matches against teams from Italy in all competitions and have never won an away game against a Serie A team in their history.
Lazio have won five of their six matches in the UEFA Europa League this season and are looking to secure six victories in a single European campaign for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
Prediction: Lazio 1-1 Real Sociedad
After their scintillating run through November, Lazio have been a little more vulnerable since suffering a six-goal Serie A thrashing by Inter last month. While the home side still pose plenty of threat, Real Sociedad should be capable of scoring and perhaps claiming a point.
