Monaco
Last week, Monaco faced two disappointments. During their encounter with Benfica in Lisbon, the Monegasques led multiple times and came close to at least forcing extra time after a 0:1 defeat at home. Ultimately, they ended up drawing 3:3 and were eliminated from the Champions League. Their return to Europe's most prestigious tournament is also in jeopardy as they currently sit fifth in the table, which does not grant them that right. This situation arose after losing to Lille in the last round. Minamino responded to Haraldsson's double late in the first half, but in the second, Monaco managed only an unapproved goal from Ilenikhena. Gutter noted post-match that the numbers don't lie—the opponent clearly created more chances and took more shots. However, the Austrian coach, who recently extended his contract until 2027, defended his players, criticizing some of the referee's decisions. He also tries to maintain a positive outlook: "I see that we look better than a few weeks ago when I wasn't satisfied with our performance. Every game has three points at stake. There are still 33 points up for grabs."

Gutter managed to return Monaco to the Champions League after they fell out of the European zone two seasons ago, but now the princely club faces challenges as they trail Marseille, Nice, and Lille by six, three, and one points respectively. However, what is most concerning is the Monegasques' poor record against direct competitors. A goalless draw against Lille in the first half of the season remains their best result in such matches. Furthermore, Monaco has lost three times to PSG this season—2:4 and 1:4 in the league, and 0:1 in the Supercup. Overall, their winter record is unconvincing, with five defeats and two draws against only four victories. On the road, Gutter's side has not won a league match since November, suffering three consecutive defeats. In addition to Marseille, PSG, and Lille, Monaco even managed to lose to Montpellier. Their defensive reliability has significantly declined, conceding 15 goals in seven  matches in 2025, just one goal fewer than in the first 16 rounds.

In the battle for a Champions League spot, Monaco can still rely on their home performances. The Monegasques recorded five victories in their last six home matches, the latest being their most impressive—7:1 against Nantes. Birat scored a hat-trick in that match, marking his second such achievement since joining the team in January. Against Reims, the Monegasques hope to continue this streak; however, this opponent has posed challenges for them in recent years. The last time the "White Reds" triumphed at Stade Louis II was in 2020, while the last three meetings here ended in defeats for the hosts. This season, Gutter's men failed to beat Reims away, drawing 0:0 and losing in the penalty shootout after a 1:1 draw in the cup.

Reims
Reims took another step towards the French Cup final on Tuesday, defeating Angers in a penalty shootout. Nakamura's goal nearly secured victory for the "Red Whites" in regular time, but their opponents equalized in the fifth minute of stoppage time, sending the match to penalties. In this area, the "Red Whites" have been unmatched in the current cup run, having previously progressed past Monaco and Bourgoin-Jallieu with successful spot-kicks as well. Now, Reims sits just two steps away from qualification for the Europa League, something they last achieved in the 2019/20 season. Paradoxically, at that time, the team under Diavara could very well find themselves in Ligue 2, where they last played in the 2017/18 campaign. This is because, while they can progress in the cup without needing to win in regular time, similar results in the league earn the team only one point. In their last 12 matches, which mark a winless streak, Reims has secured just five points, making it the longest current winless streak among all Ligue 1 teams. Currently, they sit five points ahead of the relegation zone, with the playoff zone just three points behind them.

This negative turn of events this season seemed unbelievable back in November 2024 when Reims still harbored hopes for European competition, sitting seventh in the table after 11 rounds. Luka Elsner had lost just one of his first seven league matches in charge of the new club. However, circumstances changed for the Slovenian, who was sacked in early February after a 1:2 defeat to Nantes. At that point, it marked the ninth consecutive match the "Red Whites" were unable to win in the league. His replacement, Samba Diavara, has failed to lead the team back to winning ways, losing his first three matches. In these matches, Reims even failed to score, suffering defeats to Lyon, Angers, and Reims. Even the league's best playmaker, Junya Ito, who leads Ligue 1 with 48 created chances and 7.9 expected assists, has been unable to help the team. The loss of Munetsi in midfield, who transferred to Wolverhampton in the winter, is proving to be a significant setback for the squad.

Interestingly, Reims has performed better away from home than at their own stadium, where their last success dates back to early October, and they have recorded only two victories in total. The last points collected by the "Red Whites" came in a 1:1 draw away at PSG at the end of January. The fact that Reims is the only team that has not lost to the Parisians in both encounters this season highlights their potential. Their last victory was also away, a 3:0 win over Le Havre in November. Thus, the team hopes that the positive momentum from reaching the cup semi-finals and their favorable statistics against Monaco will help them create an upset again, although there are not many justifiable reasons to expect this.

Monaco possible starting lineup:
Majecki; Vanderson, Singo, Kehrer, Mawissa; Zakaria, Camara; Akliouche, Minamino, Ben Seghir; Biereth

Reims possible starting lineup:

Monaco vs Reims Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
The two teams have crossed paths 67 times across all competitions. They have been evenly matched in these meetings with 25 wins apiece and 17 games ending in draws.
They have met twice this season. They played out a goalless draw in the reverse fixture in December. They met in the Coupe de France round of 32 in January when the visitors came out on top in the penalty shootout after the score ended 1-1 in regulation time.
Monaco have won four of their five home games in 2025, scoring 15 goals.
Reims have won three of their 11 games this year with all three wins registered on penalties in the Coupe de France.
Both teams have registered three wins in their last eight meetings in this fixture. Interestingly, all wins have been registered in away games.
The visitors have lost three of their last five away games in Ligue 1, failing to score in three games in that period.

Prediction: Monaco 1-1 Reims
Inconsistency is threatening to derail Monaco's season and their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League again next season, as not much can be read into their recent 7-1 win over Nantes, due to the man advantage they enjoyed for most of the game. The midweek cup win should give Reims a lift, and even though their league form has been dismal in 2025, the tide will turn eventually, and they could start that against a wounded Monaco.
