Villarreal
The "Yellow Submarine" has struggled significantly over the last month of the previous year, resulting in a loss of their place in the top four of the La Liga table, along with an unexpected exit from the Copa del Rey against the lesser-known Pontevedra from the fourth tier. The new calendar year did not start on a positive note for Marcelino García Toral's side, suffering a narrow defeat to Real Sociedad away from home. However, has remained unbeaten for nearly two months, and they now have a wonderful opportunity to close in on Athletic Club, who currently sit fourth with a four-point lead after losing their current match. Furthermore, Villarreal could extend their advantage over their nearest rival, Betis, to nine points.
The active unbeaten streak began with a confident victory over Mallorca, who were then in close proximity in the table, winning 4-0. The sequence continued with another emphatic home win against Valladolid (5-1), and in between those matches, Marcelino's team managed a 1-1 draw away at Atletico, failing to convert several clear scoring chances at the end of that game. This was followed by a 2-1 away victory against Las Palmas, a somewhat disappointing home draw in the derby against Valencia (1-1) despite numerous missed opportunities, and a nervy 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano, who were at that time their closest rivals. The decisive goal was scored by Ayoze Perez in the middle of the second half, Villarreal's leading scorer. Even though the visitors played with a numerical advantage from the 42nd minute, finding and maintaining that edge proved challenging for the "yellow subamarine".
Espanyol
The "Periquitos" have also had their fair share of successes recently. They kicked off the calendar year with a disappointing yet overall fair home draw against Leganes, but a week later, Manolo Jimenez's team opened the second round of the championship with a 2-1 victory over Valladolid, a direct competitor in the relegation battle. Their newcomer, Roberto Fernandez, scored the winner just 11 minutes after coming on as a substitute in that match. Espanyol extended their unbeaten streak with an away match against Sevilla (1-1) and, a week later, shockingly defeated Real Madrid at home in a somewhat controversial encounter, winning 1-0 with a goal from Carlos Romero, who could have been sent off at the start of the second half.
The next match saw Jimenez's men fall to Real Sociedad (1-2) in San Sebastian. Nevertheless, the Catalans showed moments of promise, managing to equalize after conceding an early goal and maintaining a positive score for a long stretch, only to eventually lose. This was followed by a draw with Athletic. In that game, despite their opponent creating more chances, the hosts took the lead when Roberto Fernandez punished Unai Simon for a grave error near his own goal. The Basques later equalized, but "Periquitos" managed to hold on for the draw. Last weekend, Espanyol fortuitously won an away match against another relegation rival, Alaves, 1-0. The visitors were under pressure throughout the game, facing potential conceding goals more than once, but they held firm, and near the end of the encounter, they scored the winning goal – a center-back Fernando Calero, brought on by Manolo Jimenez instead of attacking Javi Puado to strengthen the defense, provided a pleasant bonus. Espanyol now enjoys a four-point cushion above the relegation zone, allowing them a margin for error without serious tournament consequences.
