Lazio
Just four days after Pedro converted a penalty in the dying minutes to secure a 2-1 victory against Milan at San Siro, Lazio pulled off a similar feat in the Europa League Round of 16 clash against Viktoria Plzen, despite being reduced to nine men. The first leg was poised to end in a 1-1 draw following red cards for Nicolo Rovella and Samuel Gigot. However, a dramatic twist in the dying moments now makes the Romans favorites to advance to the next round. Gustav Isaksen’s goal in the 98th minute clinched a remarkable victory, extending Lazio's record for late-game finishes: they have also netted the most goals in this season (six) during stoppage time of the second half.
As they vie for a Champions League spot alongside Bologna, Juventus, Fiorentina, and potentially their main rivals Roma, the Romans may also consider progressing to the UEFA elite tournament via the Europa League route. However, Marco Baroni’s men must first revive their home performance: the Eagles have managed just one win in their last six Serie A matches at Stadio Olimpico - against lowly Monza.
Interestingly, Lazio has lost their last two encounters against Udinese. However, ahead of the fixture against the Zebras, Baroni is pleased to hear some good news: team captain Mattia Zaccagni has returned to fitness and is ready to feature. Consequently, the coach intends to alter his team's formation from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3. In the Thursday return leg against Viktoria, Rovella will miss out due to suspension, meaning he will join the midfield alongside Gendouzi and Vecino for Monday evening’s clash.
Udinese
In recent years, Udinese's once dismal record against Lazio has shown marked improvement: in their last ten meetings, both teams have secured three victories apiece with four matches ending in draws.
In their previous outing, Udinese claimed their fourth win in five matches since the beginning of February, courtesy of a penalty from Toven in their match against Parma. As a result, the Bianconeri find themselves in the top half of the table, steering clear of a repeat of last year’s relegation battle: coach Kosta Runjaic has worked wonders with a squad that nearly faced the drop to Serie B. Indeed, Udinese boasts the largest positive point differential between the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns, accumulating 15 points more than at this stage last season.
"We will try to make life difficult for Lazio. We have good memories of our first victory this season - against Lazio. Earlier in the season, we faced injuries, and we missed those players, particularly in training. Now everyone is available, and I have options. It's a nice headache," noted Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic. His final comment particularly pertains to the goalkeeper position. In the absence of injured Okoye, the team has utilized two goalkeepers: first Sava, who also picked up an injury, and then third-choice Padelli. After Padelli's impressive performance against Parma, Italian media expects Runjaic to stick with him despite Okoye's return to fitness.
Lazio possible starting lineup:
Provedel; Lazzari, Gila, Romagnoli, Tavares; Guendouzi, Rovella; Isaksen, Dia, Zaccagni; Tchaouna
Udinese possible starting lineup:
Padelli; Kristensen, Bijol, Solet, Kamara; Atta, Lovric, Karlstrom, Ekkelenkamp; Thauvin, Lucca
Lazio vs Udinese Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
Lazio have a good recent record against Udinese and have won 30 out of the last 55 matches played between the two teams, as opposed to Udinese's 14 victories.
Udinese have won their last two matches against Lazio in Serie A and could secure three consecutive victories against the Biancocelesti for the first time since 2005.
After a run of nine victories in 10 matches against Udinese in Serie A, Lazio have managed to win only three of their last 10 such games in the competition.
Udinese are unbeaten in their last four matches away from home against Lazio in Serie A and could achieve a run of five such games on the trot for only the second time in the history of the competition.
Lazio have won only one of their last six home games in Serie A.
Prediction: Lazio 2-1 Udinese
In fine form and posing a real threat up front, Udinese will not be beaten easily by a Lazio side that has one eye on Europe. Yet, the hosts have scored more goals in the last 15 minutes of play of any Serie A team this season - no fewer than 18 - so another late winner cannot be counted out.
