Why Indonesian Players Rejected the ASEAN All Stars' Invitation to Face Manchester United

Some Indonesian national team players have declined the chance to represent ASEAN All Stars in a friendly against Manchester United, scheduled for May 28, 2025, at Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. The decision comes down to a timing conflict with crucial World Cup qualification matches that the Indonesian team will face in early June 2025.
On the same dates as the match against Manchester United, Indonesia’s national team, under coach Patrick Kluivert, will be preparing for two important games against China and Japan. Missing out on training could risk their chances of playing in these high-stakes qualifiers. Moreover, there is the added risk of injury when facing top-tier players from Manchester United, which could affect their participation in the upcoming qualifiers.
The ASEAN All Stars squad will feature players from 12 AFF member countries, including Indonesia, and the AFF is responsible for selecting these players. Vietnam, which does not have any fixtures in early June, has agreed to release several of their top players to participate in the friendly, while Indonesia remains cautious about releasing their stars due to the importance of the World Cup qualifiers.
