Three Key Lessons for Arema FC After Defeat to Persita in Liga 1

Arema FC’s 2-3 defeat to Persita Tangerang in the 29th week of BRI Liga 1 2024-25 highlighted several weaknesses for the SingoEdan. Despite leading 2-1 at halftime, they were unable to hold onto their advantage, allowing Persita to score two second-half goals and secure the win. As a result, Arema remained in 8th place with 42 points, unable to climb higher despite the opportunity to move into 6th with a win.
The match revealed three important lessons for Arema. Firstly, while they controlled possession, their defensive lapses and inability to stop Persita’s playmaker, Eber Bessa, allowed their opponents to dominate. Bessa’s vision and precise assists were crucial in all three of Persita’s goals, exposing weaknesses in Arema’s midfield, particularly the failure of ArkhanFikri and Pablo Oliveira to contain him. Arema’s earlier success, including a 3-0 win in their first meeting with Persita, was partly due to the presence of a defensive midfielder like ShultonFajar, who was absent in this match.
Secondly, Arema’s defensive vulnerability was evident after the break, with the team caught off guard by Persita's more aggressive approach. The loss of key defender Thales Lira, who was suspended, further weakened Arema’s backline. The pairing of Choi Bo-kyung and Julian Guevara struggled to cope with the speed and movement of Persita’s attackers, leading to gaps that resulted in the conceded goals.
Lastly, Arema’s attacking play lacked the sharpness needed to break down Persita’s defense in the second half, with too many poorly executed crosses and passes into the box, preventing them from creating meaningful scoring chances.
