Persija Parts Ways with Carlos Pena

Persija Jakarta has officially decided to part ways with their head coach, Carlos Pena, with just four matches remaining in the 2024-25 Liga 1 season. The club announced this decision on their official website on May 1, 2025, acknowledging that it was a difficult farewell. Carlos Pena, who led the team for 30 weeks in the league, had a record of 13 wins, 8 draws, and 9 losses during his tenure. Despite his dedication and commitment, the club felt the need for a change to secure a better final position in the league standings.
The management expressed that the decision was made due to the team's inconsistent performance in the second half of the season, which hindered their pursuit of a top spot. Persija's Director, Mohamad Prapanca, mentioned that the change was essential for the team's progression. He emphasized that this shift was a professional decision aimed at improving the club's results. As part of the transition, Ricky Nelson has been appointed as the caretaker coach for the remainder of the season, with hopes that his leadership will have a positive impact on the team.
Carlos Pena had initially been tasked with leading Persija to a top-four finish this season, a goal that was still within reach as the team stood fifth in the standings, just three points behind fourth-place Malut United. However, their recent inconsistent performances, including a 0-2 defeat to Semen Padang at home, led to the club's decision to part ways with the coach. Looking ahead, Persija will face Borneo FC in their next match on May 4, 2025.
