Russia Eyes Friendly Match Against Indonesia Amid FIFA Sanctions in September 2025
Russia has expressed interest in arranging a friendly match against Indonesia’s national football team during the September 2025 FIFA Matchday window. Despite still being under FIFA sanctions stemming from their suspension in 2022, Russia is allowed to organize non-competitive international matches due to certain eased restrictions. This has enabled them to remain active on the international stage, as seen in previous friendlies such as their match against Vietnam in 2024.
The proposed match against Indonesia comes as part of Russia's continued efforts to maintain international football relations and competitive rhythm outside of FIFA-sanctioned tournaments. Russia's ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, highlighted the scheduling gap in both teams’ calendars as an opportunity, with discussions suggesting the match could be held either in Indonesia or Russia. There is also consideration for a mini-tournament involving a third nation to broaden the event.
Indonesia has shown openness to the proposal, with confirmation from PSSI representatives that talks are ongoing. While nothing has been finalized, both sides appear optimistic about the match taking place. The initiative reflects mutual interest in fostering football diplomacy and international exposure despite current restrictions on Russia's competitive participation.
