Barcelona's No.10 Legacy Continues: Yamal Set to Receive Iconic Jersey on Birthday

According to Spanish outlet Sport, with Spanish striker Fati joining Monaco, Barcelona has decided to award the symbolic No.10 jersey to teenage prodigy Yamal, who will turn 18 soon.
During Fati's tenure at Barça, the No.10 had been his exclusive number, and Yamal—who considers Fati a close friend—never requested the jersey out of respect. However, with Fati's loan departure officially announced today, Barça will not follow the 2023-24 season model (when the number was frozen during Fati's loan to Brighton). At that time, no clear heir was identified, but now the situation has changed: Fati himself did not request to retain the number, and Yamal's rise has made him the unanimous choice.

Barça's hierarchy believes Yamal is fully deserving of the jersey, and the commercial potential is also a factor—shirts with his name and No.10 are expected to generate significant revenue. While the club will unveil the 2025-26 home kit next Tuesday, Sport reports that the official announcement of Yamal's No.10 assignment will be delayed: per the May 27th renewal agreement, the club plans a grand ceremony on his 18th birthday.

Yamal's coming-of-age day falls on July 13 (Sunday), coinciding with Barça's pre-season training under manager Flick. Though the exact event date is yet to be confirmed due to the holiday schedule, he will make his debut in the No.10 jersey on that occasion. Notably, Yamal's grandmother Fatima, who missed the renewal ceremony at Laporta's office, will attend the Barça headquarters to witness her grandson embarking on his No.10 legacy.

Yamal will thus join the ranks of Messi, Maradona, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo as the next bearer of Barcelona's iconic No.10 jersey.
