Real Madrid Eyes Crystal Palace Midfielder as Long-Term Replacement for Toni Kroos
Real Madrid has been adjusting their midfield after the departures of veteran stars Toni Kroos and Luka Modric over the past two years. Kroos retired following Euro 2024, and Modric left for AC Milan during the recent summer transfer window. The club has yet to bring in a new central midfielder to fill the void left by these experienced players, highlighting a growing need for reinforcement in that area.
In an effort to strengthen their midfield depth, Real Madrid has set their sights on Adam Wharton, a rising 21-year-old midfielder from Crystal Palace in the English Premier League. Wharton has quickly gained recognition for his ability to control the game's tempo and distribute the ball effectively, drawing comparisons to Kroos in terms of his vision and passing style.
While Wharton may not match Kroos’s mastery in set pieces or his precise long-range passes, he offers a valuable combination of defensive work and midfield versatility, able to operate as both a deep-lying playmaker and a box-to-box midfielder. This blend of skills makes him an attractive prospect for Madrid’s future midfield lineup.
Reports indicate that Madrid is closely monitoring Wharton’s development with a possible transfer planned for 2026, following the FIFA World Cup. Although Wharton is not interested in leaving Crystal Palace this summer, Real Madrid’s interest is expected to intensify, even as competition from other top English clubs is anticipated.
