Laporte Returns to Athletic Bilbao After FIFA Approves Transfer

Athletic Bilbao has successfully re-signed Aymeric Laporte from Al-Nassr after FIFA overturned its initial decision and approved the Spanish defender’s transfer. The club had attempted to bring Laporte back on September 1, but the move initially failed to materialize before the transfer window closed. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) appealed to FIFA to allow the transfer, which was initially rejected.
Following an appeal process, FIFA eventually granted permission for the transfer. Reports indicate that the initial failure stemmed from Al-Nassr not entering Laporte’s transfer details into FIFA’s Transfer Matching System. Once the International Transfer Certificate (ITC) is issued, Laporte can officially be registered with Bilbao for the current season.
Laporte previously played for Athletic Bilbao from 2012 to 2018, making over 200 appearances before moving to Manchester City. At City, he enjoyed five successful seasons, winning five Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy, before joining Al-Nassr in 2023.
In addition to his club success, Laporte has been a key figure for the Spanish national team, earning 40 caps and contributing to Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph. His return is expected to strengthen Bilbao’s defense as they prepare for the new La Liga campaign.
