New San Siro Stadium Draws Inspiration from Dortmund, Valencia, and Spurs
AC Milan and Inter Milan have outlined clear demands for the design of their future shared stadium, drawing influence from some of Europe’s most atmospheric venues. Working with architects Foster + Partners and Manica, both clubs are aiming to recreate the intensity of the current San Siro while modernizing the matchday experience. Central to their vision is the incorporation of steep stands, a defining element in iconic stadiums such as Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, Valencia’s Mestalla, and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A key architectural feature will be a 37-degree incline for the stands, mirroring the famous “Yellow Wall” in Dortmund. This exceeds FIFA’s previous recommendation of a 34-degree maximum, signaling the clubs’ commitment to preserving a sense of vertical drama and fan proximity. The design approach seeks to maintain the intimidating effect and towering presence long associated with San Siro, where supporters feel almost suspended over the pitch.
The verticality is intended not only to enhance visibility but also to amplify atmosphere, creating a powerful wall of noise that can influence the momentum of major matches. Similar to Mestalla in Valencia, the structure will convey a feeling of being directly above the action, intensifying the emotional connection between supporters and team performance.
Beyond the stands, the new stadium will eliminate the running track that distanced fans in the old design, bringing spectators closer to the field. Additional inspiration from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will guide the development of modern amenities and fan facilities, ensuring a balance between tradition, spectacle, and contemporary comfort. The result aims to be a state-of-the-art home that retains the soul of one of football’s most storied arenas.
