Premier League Likely to Feature Only One Boxing Day Match This Season

The Premier League is expected to schedule just one match on Boxing Day this season, a departure from the traditional full slate of fixtures. While December 26 usually sees a complete round of games, scheduling constraints and broadcasting commitments are forcing a more limited lineup this year.
The unusual arrangement is largely due to Boxing Day falling on a Friday, combined with contractual obligations to deliver 33 weekend matches for broadcasters throughout the season. This limits the league’s flexibility to stage multiple games on the holiday itself.
Changes in other competitions, including the Champions League and FA Cup, which now take place exclusively on weekends, have further complicated fixture planning. As a result, the 18th-week schedule is expected to follow the usual seasonal pattern, with one game on Friday, one on Monday, and the remainder across Saturday and Sunday.
Although the full festive schedule has not yet been finalized, the Premier League is committed to announcing all Boxing Day and surrounding fixtures by mid-November. Supporters can expect updates covering matches up to late December, maintaining some clarity amid a busy winter calendar.
