Season Ends Early for Mees Hilgers After Serious ACL Injury
Indonesian national team defender Mees Hilgers has suffered a severe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, as confirmed by his club, FC Twente. The incident occurred during a training session earlier in the week, and medical examinations revealed significant ligament damage in his knee. This type of injury is one of the most serious for athletes, as the ACL plays a vital role in stabilizing the knee joint and preventing excessive movement between the thigh and shin bones.
ACL injuries often result from sudden changes in direction, awkward landings, or direct impact to the knee. Recovery typically takes between nine to twelve months, meaning Hilgers will miss the remainder of the 2025–2026 season. This early season-ending setback is particularly unfortunate, as the 25-year-old defender has yet to make an appearance for FC Twente this term due to unresolved contract negotiations with the club.
FC Twente’s management had been pushing for Hilgers to extend his stay, but the player was reportedly interested in pursuing a move elsewhere. Before the injury, Eredivisie side NEC
Nijmegen had shown strong interest in signing him during the January 2026 transfer window. The deal, however, will likely be postponed until the defender recovers fully from his injury.
For now, Hilgers faces a long rehabilitation process as he works toward returning to full fitness. The setback also halts his momentum with the Indonesian national team, where he has earned four international caps. Both club and country will hope he makes a complete recovery and returns stronger for the following season.
