The Future of San Siro: What Milan and Inter Have Planned Next

AC Milan and Inter Milan have officially acquired the San Siro area from the City of Milan, marking a historic shift in ownership of the iconic Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. The deal represents a major milestone in the clubs’ long-awaited plans for a new stadium project. Legal formalities, including the signing of the sale agreement, have been completed, giving both clubs control over the stadium and its surrounding land.
To finance the acquisition, Milan and Inter secured bank loans exceeding €90 million, paying an initial installment of €73 million toward the total price of €197 million. The City of Milan will deduct €22 million from the payment to support the reconstruction of the Patroclo tunnel and land reclamation efforts around the site. This financial structure sets the stage for the next phase of development.
Despite this progress, opposition to the stadium’s demolition and the construction of new facilities continues. Authorities in Milan are reportedly investigating allegations of tender fraud, which has added a layer of uncertainty to the project. Nevertheless, the completion of the property transfer allows the clubs to move forward with their long-term vision.
Architectural firms Foster + Partners and MANICA have been appointed to design the new stadium, which will have a capacity of 71,500 spectators. The 280,000m² area will not only house the stadium but also include commercial spaces, club offices, hotels, shops, and landscaped parks, creating a modern sports and entertainment hub in the heart of Milan.
