After a Decade of Waiting, Cagliari Finally Secures Approval to Build New Gigi Riva Stadium

Cagliari has officially received the green light to begin construction of their long-awaited new stadium, set to be named after both the club and Italian football legend Gigi Riva. The project marks the end of a decade-long bureaucratic process that delayed progress and will see the new venue built on the same site as the now-abandoned Stadio Sant’Elia. This milestone brings renewed optimism to the club and the city, signaling a fresh era for Cagliari and its supporters.
The redevelopment plan involves demolishing the old Sant’Elia stadium, which has stood unused since 2017, to make way for a modern arena capable of hosting football matches, concerts, and other major events. Designed to hold 25,000 spectators, with the option to expand to 30,000, the new facility will meet international standards and potentially serve as one of Italy’s host venues for the EURO 2032 tournament, which will be jointly organized with Turkey.
Cagliari’s mayor, Massimo Zedda, confirmed that the project has cleared all environmental and logistical concerns, paving the way for construction to move forward without further administrative hurdles. The approval marks a significant victory for the city after years of planning delays and stalled negotiations. Local leaders view the stadium as a key development for both sports and urban revitalization in Sardinia.
Since leaving Sant’Elia in 2012 due to structural deterioration, Cagliari has played home matches at the temporary Unipol Domus stadium, built nearby as an interim solution. The upcoming Gigi Riva Stadium represents more than just a new home for the team—it symbolizes a long-overdue dream finally coming to life, one that blends modern infrastructure with deep respect for the club’s rich history and its legendary icon.
