AFF 2026 Scheduled During European Off-Season, Boosting Indonesia’s Championship Hopes

The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) has officially set the 2026 AFF Championship to take place from July 24 to August 26, 2026. Moving the tournament to the mid-year marks a major shift from previous editions, creating a significant opportunity for teams like Indonesia to compete at full strength.
Holding the competition during Europe’s off-season allows Indonesian diaspora players in European leagues to join the national squad, strengthening the team’s chances of success. This timing provides a rare window for clubs to release their key international players without conflicting with league schedules.
The 2026 edition also celebrates the 30th anniversary of the AFF Championship and will feature a new main sponsor, branding it as the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026. The tournament format includes play-offs in early June, a group stage from late July to early August, and knockout rounds concluding in late August.
Alongside the AFF Championship, Southeast Asian football is also preparing for a new FIFA-backed tournament, the ASEAN FIFA Cup. Unlike the AFF Championship, which is not officially recognized by FIFA, this new competition will require clubs to release players for national duty, potentially elevating its prestige and impact in the region.
