Victor Osimhen Faces Injury Setback Ahead of Africa Cup of Nations

Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray’s star striker and key figure for Nigeria, suffered a suspected hamstring injury during the World Cup 2026 qualifying loss against DR Congo. The injury forced him off the field at halftime, leaving Nigeria without one of their most important attacking threats and adding to the disappointment of missing out on World Cup qualification.
The striker was visibly in pain, showing signs of discomfort and limping after the match, prompting immediate concerns about the severity of his injury. He is now traveling back to Istanbul for an MRI to determine the extent of the hamstring issue, which will dictate his availability for both club and country.
Osimhen’s potential absence could impact Galatasaray significantly, particularly ahead of the high-profile derby against Fenerbahce. With a history of thigh and hamstring problems in recent seasons, the forward faces a tight recovery window of around five weeks before Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations opener against Tanzania on December 23.
Despite the setback, Osimhen has shown resilience and leadership, previously scoring twice in extra time to help Nigeria defeat Gabon in the semifinals of the World Cup playoff. Attention now turns to his medical assessment, as his fitness will be crucial for both Galatasaray’s derby clash and Nigeria’s campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations.
