Neville Slams Luke Shaw's 'Dawdling' After Manchester United's Defeat to 10-Man Everton
Manchester United legend Gary Neville was highly critical of the team's performance, particularly left-back Luke Shaw, after United fell to a 0-1 home defeat against 10-man Everton.
Neville questioned the tactical setup, noting that United played with five defenders in the back, which he felt was useless as they failed to win both the first and second balls.
His harshest criticism was reserved for Luke Shaw's effort in the second half. Neville stated that Shaw was "dawdling" and "pretending to be busy" as he moved forward, calling his effort "wasting time." Neville admitted that Shaw's performance over the preceding 20 minutes had annoyed him, emphasizing that a player should sprint forward every time, regardless of tactics, and that he could not accept that kind of behavior.
Neville also commented on the controversial first-half red card shown to Everton's Idrissa Gueye for a clash with teammate Michael Keane. Neville described the incident as an ugly, yet minor, misunderstanding between teammates, suggesting that goalkeeper Jordan Pickford handled the situation well and that the severity of the confrontation was low.
In contrast, former Everton manager Roberto Martinez maintained that referee Tony Harrington had no choice but to issue a red card. Martinez acknowledged that it was an obvious miscommunication between Gueye and Keane. However, he insisted that the extended hand motion by Gueye, which made contact above the neck area, mandated a red card under current rules against any aggressive action toward the neck or head.
