FIFA Official: Cristiano Ronaldo Receives Three-Match Ban, Two Suspended, Cleared for World Cup Opener

FIFA has officially announced its decision regarding Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo’s suspension for an elbowing incident during the World Cup qualifiers. Although he received a three-match ban, two of those matches have been suspended for a period of one year, meaning the star player will not miss any of Portugal’s group stage games at next summer’s World Cup, as reported by The Athletic.
The incident occurred during Portugal's penultimate qualifying match against the Republic of Ireland, where Ronaldo was shown a straight red card for elbowing Dara O'Shea off the ball. This red card automatically triggered a one-match ban, which he served during the final qualifier against Armenia.
However, after further review, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee deemed the elbowing to be of a more severe nature, extending the total suspension to three matches. Crucially, the committee decided to suspend the execution of the final two matches for a probation period of one year. As long as Ronaldo does not commit a "similar nature of offense" within the next year, the two suspended matches will be automatically waived, allowing him to avoid missing any matches during the main phase of the World Cup tournament.
