Premier League Rivals Newcastle and Sunderland Battle for Guendouzi’s Signature

Newcastle United and Sunderland have emerged as strong contenders to sign Matteo Guendouzi during the winter transfer window. The 26-year-old midfielder, currently at Lazio, has become a sought-after option as both clubs aim to strengthen their midfield depth. Lazio is reportedly prepared to negotiate, but only at a substantial valuation of around €30 million.

Guendouzi’s career has taken a steady upward turn since leaving Arsenal. After a productive spell with Marseille, he joined Lazio initially on loan before completing a permanent move a year later. His consistent performances in Serie A, highlighted by more than a hundred appearances and notable contributions in goals and assists, have drawn renewed interest from Premier League sides seeking reliability and experience.

Sunderland’s pursuit of Guendouzi raises questions given the midfield additions they made last summer, yet the club appears eager to add further quality. Their growing ambition, coupled with hints of a potential reunion with figures familiar to Guendouzi, has positioned them ahead of Newcastle for the moment. The player’s profile fits Sunderland’s desire to elevate their competitiveness in the league.

Newcastle’s interest, meanwhile, is driven by uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of Joelinton. The club has monitored Guendouzi for some time and views him as a capable option to stabilize their midfield. With both clubs financially able to meet Lazio’s demands, the coming weeks will determine whether the French midfielder returns to England and which side ultimately secures his services.
