Mourinho: Manchester United Made Many Mistakes, But Letting McTominay Leave Was Huge

Benfica manager José Mourinho praised his former Manchester United protégé, Scott McTominay, both before and after their Champions League clash against Napoli. McTominay currently plays for the Italian side.
Before the match, Mourinho highlighted his role in the midfielder's career, saying, "The only thing Scott owes me is that I put Paul Pogba on the bench for him to play, even in that Champions League game against Sevilla." Mourinho noted that he gave McTominay his Manchester United debut, but credited the player's subsequent success entirely to himself, emphasizing that the midfielder earned his place in the first team.
Mourinho then delivered a strong critique of his former club: "Manchester United letting McTominay leave was a mistake... We know Manchester United has made many mistakes over the years, but letting McTominay leave was a huge mistake."
After the game, Mourinho reiterated his close bond with McTominay, joking that he took the player’s shirt because he deserved it for benching Pogba for him. He noted that despite the loss, McTominay's competitive "winner's mentality" was evident in their brief chat. Mourinho concluded by praising McTominay’s current happiness at Napoli, his "Best Foreign Player" award, and his achievement of helping Scotland qualify for the World Cup.
