Indonesia U-22’s SEA Games 2025 Setback: A Closer Look at the Team’s Struggles

Indonesia U-22 ended their Group C campaign at the SEA Games 2025 with a 3-1 victory over Myanmar. Despite this win, the team was unable to advance to the semifinals. Their three points from three matches proved insufficient to secure a spot among the tournament’s top four teams.
In the final group standings, Indonesia finished second behind the Philippines, who led the group with six points. The team’s fate then relied on a comparison of the best runners-up across groups. Unfortunately, Indonesia fell short due to a lower number of goals scored, matching Malaysia in points and goal difference but trailing in actual goals.
For head coach Indra Sjafri, this tournament marked his third SEA Games in charge. His previous campaigns had been more successful, including a finals appearance in 2019 and a gold medal in 2023. The early exit in 2025, however, represented a significant setback in his coaching record at this regional event.
Historically, Indonesia has been a strong contender in SEA Games football, though it is not the region’s dominant force. With three gold medals compared to Thailand’s sixteen, the country rarely fails to reach the semifinals. Before 2025, Indonesia’s last group-stage exit occurred sixteen years earlier in 2009, highlighting the unusual nature of this outcome.
A key factor in Indonesia’s disappointing campaign was their low goal tally. Over two matches, the team scored only three goals, fewer than Malaysia and even Timor Leste, which limited their chances of progressing. Only Singapore, Laos, and Myanmar recorded fewer goals, emphasizing that offensive struggles played a central role in the team’s early elimination.
