Allegri’s Unfinished Mission: Milan Still Searching for a Classic No.9

Last summer, Max Allegri made it clear that strengthening the center-forward position was one of his top priorities. He was looking for a physically strong, traditional striker in the mold of Olivier Giroud, someone capable of leading the line and offering a reliable focal point in attack.
That desire remained firm until the very end of the transfer window. Milan even explored a potential swap deal with Roma, involving Santiago Gimenez and Artem Dovbyk, as the club tried to meet Allegri’s tactical needs. However, negotiations dragged on and ultimately collapsed before the August deadline.
With the deal falling through, Gimenez stayed at Milan despite not fully matching the profile Allegri wanted. His situation soon became concerning, as he failed to score in the league and then spent around six weeks sidelined due to an ankle injury, limiting his impact even further.
Several months later, the picture has hardly improved. Gimenez struggled to convince during the first half of the season, reinforcing Allegri’s view that the squad still lacks a true target man. As a result, the coach continues to push management to bring in a genuine No.9 who can anchor the attack.
Milan have since been linked with a long list of potential strikers from various leagues, highlighting how unresolved the issue remains. At the same time, the club already relies heavily on Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic as its main attacking duo, with both contributing a combined 15 goals across competitions this season, underscoring both their importance and the need for a complementary striker up front.
