Real Sociedad Turn to Pellegrino Matarazzo in Bid to Escape LaLiga Danger Zone

Real Sociedad have appointed American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo as their new head coach as the club battles to move away from the LaLiga relegation zone. The decision reflects growing concern in San Sebastián after a difficult run of results that has left the team hovering dangerously close to the bottom three.
Matarazzo arrives with extensive experience in German football, having previously managed Stuttgart and more recently Hoffenheim. His most recent role ended in late 2024, and he now returns to coaching with a long-term project in Spain after agreeing to a contract running until June 2027.
The coaching change followed the dismissal of Sergio Francisco after a third straight league defeat. Real Sociedad confirmed Matarazzo’s appointment shortly after a frustrating draw against Levante, a result that highlighted the club’s ongoing struggles and left them only two points clear of relegation.
Once a regular contender for European qualification, Sociedad have found consistency difficult to regain since the end of Imanol Alguacil’s long tenure. The team has also been weakened by the departures of key midfielders Mikel Merino and Martín Zubimendi, whose transfers left a significant gap in the squad.
The match with Sociedad also marked a turning point for Levante, who announced the hiring of Portuguese coach Luís Castro after the draw. Castro takes charge of a side rooted to the bottom of the table following promotion, with the club hoping his experience can spark a revival and steer them away from an immediate return to the second division.
