Real Madrid announced on 1 June 2025 that the 44-year-old Alonso would succeed Carlo Ancelotti as head coach, signing a contract until 2028. During his 34 matches in charge, Alonso recorded 24 wins, 4 draws and 6 defeats, achieving a win rate of 70.5%.
This season, Real Madrid began with a seven-match winning streak across all competitions, but then suffered a 2–5 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Madrid derby in La Liga. They subsequently won six consecutive matches in all competitions, including a 2–1 victory over Barcelona in El Clásico. However, following a 0–1 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, Madrid managed only two wins in their next seven matches. From Round 16 of the league onward, Alonso led the team to a five-match winning streak in all competitions, but a 2–3 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final saw them miss out on the title. Alonso was dismissed the following day.
