Maarten Paes Arrival Triggers Goalkeeping Shake-Up at Ajax

Ajax Amsterdam are set for a major change in their goalkeeping department following the expected arrival of Maarten Paes. The Indonesian international’s move has quickly altered the internal hierarchy, leading to a decisive exit by veteran goalkeeper Remko Pasveer from the Dutch giants.

Reports from the Netherlands indicate that Paes will complete his transfer to Ajax this month and sign a long-term contract running until 2029. At 27, he is viewed as a strategic investment for the future, strengthening Ajax’s plans for stability and competition between the posts.

Before Paes entered the picture, Ajax relied on Vitezslav Jaros as their first-choice goalkeeper, with Pasveer serving as an experienced alternative. However, Jaros is only on loan from Liverpool, with his spell in Amsterdam due to end at the conclusion of the 2025/2026 season, creating uncertainty about Ajax’s long-term options.

That situation prompted Pasveer to make a significant personal decision. The 42-year-old has chosen to leave Ajax and continue his career with Heracles Almelo, signing a short-term deal with the possibility of an extension. His move is motivated by a desire to help his former club fight relegation from the Eredivisie during the remainder of the season.

With Pasveer’s departure confirmed, Ajax’s goalkeeping competition now centers on Paes and Jaros. Given Jaros’s loan status and mixed performances in the position this season, Paes has a clear opportunity to establish himself as Ajax’s number one, both in the short term and as a cornerstone for the club’s future.
