Indonesia Enters the Race to Host the 2031 AFC Asian Cup Amid Strong Regional Competition

The Indonesian Football Association has officially stepped forward as a candidate to host the 2031 AFC Asian Cup, marking a significant ambition on the continental stage. The move comes after the Asian Football Confederation completed its proposal submission process, confirming Indonesia as one of several federations vying for the prestigious tournament. This bid places Indonesia in direct competition with a number of established football nations across Asia.

The announcement followed discussions at the 35th AFC Congress, where plans to determine hosts for both the 2031 and 2035 editions were addressed in a single agenda. The approach was initiated by the AFC president as part of a broader effort to streamline long-term tournament planning. Interest in hosting the 2031 Asian Cup proved substantial, reflecting the growing commercial and sporting value of the competition within the region.

Indonesia is not alone in its pursuit, as four other countries have submitted individual bids to host the 2031 tournament. Australia, India, South Korea, and Kuwait are all seeking hosting rights, creating a competitive field with diverse infrastructure capabilities and football traditions. In addition to these solo bids, a joint proposal has also been put forward by Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, adding another layer of complexity to the selection process.

Historically, Indonesia has experienced hosting the Asian Cup once before, though only as part of a multi-nation arrangement in 2007 alongside Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. A successful bid this time would represent a major milestone, potentially positioning Indonesia as a standalone host and reinforcing its recent push to elevate football development, infrastructure, and international credibility.

Alongside the 2031 process, the AFC has also revealed early interest for the 2035 Asian Cup, with several federations already expressing intent to bid. The next phase will involve close coordination between the AFC and candidate hosts, including detailed bid documentation and evaluations. Final decisions for both tournaments will follow established AFC procedures and are expected to be ratified through future congress approvals.
