Serie A Emerges as Second-Biggest Spender in Record-Breaking January Transfer Window

Clubs in Italy’s Serie A stood out during the January 2026 transfer window by recording the second-highest spending in world football, trailing only the English Premier League. The figures, highlighted in a recent FIFA report, underline the league’s growing financial activity and competitiveness in the transfer market.
The winter window itself set a new benchmark globally, with more than 5,900 transfer deals completed across men’s professional football. This total slightly exceeded the number recorded the previous year, although overall spending worldwide reached about $1.9 billion, a small decline compared with January 2025.
English clubs remained the biggest spenders, investing more than $360 million during the month. Serie A teams followed with approximately $283 million in transfer expenditure, placing them ahead of Brazil, Germany, and France. The numbers reflect Italy’s willingness to invest in strengthening squads midway through the season.
In terms of transfer income, French clubs generated the highest revenue from player sales, while Italian sides ranked second, bringing in substantial funds through outgoing transfers. Brazil, England, and Spain also featured prominently in the list, demonstrating the increasingly global nature of the transfer market.
Italy’s own activity illustrated this dynamic environment, with Serie A clubs completing over a hundred incoming deals and an even larger number of departures in January alone. The steady flow of players in and out highlights both the league’s appeal to international talent and its active role in shaping the broader football transfer landscape.
