Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto Emerges as Leading Candidate to Coach Indonesia U-17 Ahead of Major 2026 Tournaments

The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has hinted at a possible appointment for the head coach position of the Indonesia U-17 national team, with Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto reportedly among the strongest candidates. The coaching role became vacant after Nova Arianto was promoted to manage the Indonesia U-20 squad, prompting the federation to move quickly to ensure stability ahead of a demanding 2026 schedule.

Indonesia U-17 is set to face a busy calendar, beginning with the AFF U-17 Championship scheduled for 11–23 April 2026. Shortly afterward, the team will compete in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup, which is planned to take place from 7–24 May 2026. These back-to-back tournaments make preparation crucial, particularly as the team seeks to maintain momentum and improve its international standing.

As part of those preparations, two international friendly matches against China were arranged at Indomilk Arena in Tangerang, played on 8 and 11 February. Because a permanent coach has not yet been appointed, Nova Arianto was again asked to lead the team during these matches. Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto assisted him, a situation that naturally sparked speculation about a possible transition in leadership.

PSSI officials have indicated that the decision on the new head coach will follow a consultation process. Input from Nova Arianto is expected to be considered, and recommendations will also be reviewed by Technical Director Alexander Zwiers. The federation appears to be taking a careful approach, weighing experience, team needs, and long-term development plans before making a final choice.

Kurniawan’s coaching résumé strengthens his candidacy. He has worked at several levels of Indonesian football, including roles with the senior national team, the U-23 side, and the U-20 squad. His experience also extends abroad, having been part of the coaching staff at Italian club Como 1907 and previously managing Malaysia’s Sabah FC. With such a background, many observers see him as a credible option to guide Indonesia’s young talents through an important year of competition.
