Team News
Atlético Madrid arrive at this Copa del Rey semi-final first leg in strong shape, sitting second in La Liga with the joint-best defensive record in the division. They have been excellent at the Metropolitano this season – very few goals conceded at home and a habit of grinding out tight wins in knockout football. No major new injury concerns: Antoine Griezmann is fit and in excellent form, while Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth are both available to provide different attacking options. Expect Diego Simeone to set up in his classic 5-3-2 or 4-4-2 diamond with Jan Oblak in goal, a back three/five featuring José María Giménez, Robin Le Normand and Reinildo/Mario Hermoso, wing-backs Nahuel Molina and Javi Galán, midfield trio Koke, Rodrigo De Paul and Pablo Barrios/Conor Gallagher, and Griezmann linking with Julián Álvarez or Sørloth up top. Atlético will press aggressively in midfield, win second balls and look to strike quickly on transitions in front of their own fans.
FC Barcelona lead La Liga by a comfortable margin and have been almost flawless in big games this season. Their away form has been particularly impressive (very few losses on the road), and they have shown real maturity in knockout ties. Injuries are light: Pedri is back in full training and should start, while Andreas Christensen remains the main long-term absentee. Expect Hansi Flick to deploy a very strong 4-2-3-1: Marc-André ter Stegen in goal, a back four with Ronald Araujo and Pau Cubarsí central, midfield control from Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, and the front three of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski (still lethal in front of goal). Barcelona will aim to control possession, press high in coordinated blocks and exploit spaces with quick combinations and wide overloads.
Head to Head Analysis
This is one of the biggest rivalries in Spanish football, and recent meetings have been extremely tight. In the last six competitive clashes, each side has won twice with two draws. Earlier this season Barcelona won the league meeting 2-1 at the Metropolitano, but Atlético knocked Barça out of last season’s Copa del Rey semi-finals. At the Metropolitano, the record is very even in recent years: Atlético are unbeaten in their last four home games against Barcelona (two wins, two draws), often winning through physical intensity, set-piece execution and counter-attacking moments. Matches between these teams are typically low-scoring and tactical – five of the last seven produced under 2.5 goals, with both sides cancelling each other out in midfield. Expect a high-intensity, physical battle with limited clear chances early and the outcome likely decided by one moment of quality, a set piece or a transition.
Prediction
This first leg at the Metropolitano promises to be a classic cup semi-final chess match. Atlético’s home fortress, defensive solidity and ability to frustrate bigger teams give them a real edge in this environment – they rarely concede early at home and love these kinds of high-stakes, physical games. Barcelona have superior attacking quality and have shown maturity in big away matches, but they can be vulnerable to Atlético’s pressing and second-ball work. The game will be cagey for long periods – both sides respecting each other, few clear openings, and very few goals until fatigue opens up spaces late. A low-scoring draw feels the most realistic outcome, with both teams happy to take a tight scoreline into the second leg at Camp Nou. Very difficult to separate them here.
Final Prediction: Draw 1-1 (or 0-0). Share of the spoils most likely – around 60% confidence in a no-winner outcome, with under 2.5 goals highly probable.
