AFC Fines Indonesia Ahead of FIFA Series 2026 as Preparations Continue

The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has been hit with a disciplinary sanction from the Asian Football Confederation just weeks before the FIFA Series 2026 takes place in Jakarta. The penalty comes at a time when the national team is intensively preparing for the international tournament, which is expected to be an important milestone for the squad. Despite the setback, preparations for the event continue without major disruption.
The sanction was issued after PSSI failed to complete administrative procedures on time for an international U-23 match against Mali held in November 2025. As a result, the federation received a fine of USD 1,500 and was instructed to settle the payment within 30 days of the official decision. The violation was linked to competition regulations concerning the proper registration of international fixtures, and previous administrative issues reportedly influenced the disciplinary ruling.
Although the fine represents an official warning from the continental governing body, it does not affect Indonesia’s participation in the upcoming FIFA Series. The tournament will still be held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on March 27 and March 30. Organizers remain focused on ensuring that the competition runs smoothly, with all logistical and technical arrangements proceeding as planned.
The FIFA Series will also mark the first official appearance of new head coach John Herdman, who was appointed earlier in 2026. The event is expected to serve as an early testing ground for the coaching staff as they begin shaping the team's playing style and evaluating player performance ahead of a busy international schedule later in the year. Four nations from different confederations will participate, creating a diverse competitive environment.
Currently ranked 122nd in the FIFA standings, Indonesia sees the tournament as an opportunity to improve both performance and global standing. Despite the administrative sanction, the federation’s main priority remains supporting the national team and ensuring a strong start under the new coaching era, with hopes that the FIFA Series will become a positive turning point for Indonesian football.
