Neymar Left Out as Brazil Names Squad for March Friendlies; Rising Star Endrick Included

Brazil’s preparation for the upcoming World Cup continues with the announcement of the squad for March friendlies in the United States, but the absence of Neymar has cast a shadow over the selections. The Santos forward, recovering from a serious knee injury sustained in October 2023, was omitted by coach Carlo Ancelotti due to not being fully fit. The matches against France on March 26 in Boston and Croatia on March 31 in Orlando mark the final opportunities for players to impress before the final World Cup roster is confirmed on May 18.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, expressed disappointment at being left out but reaffirmed his commitment to training and maintaining form for a potential World Cup spot. While he played a full 90 minutes in a recent domestic match, he did not stand out, and Ancelotti stressed that the forward must reach 100 percent physical readiness to be included in the final squad. The situation highlights the balance Brazil is seeking between experience and current fitness in their preparations.
The squad also features newcomers, with Endrick earning his first call-up under Ancelotti after scoring six goals in 12 appearances for Lyon following his transfer from Real Madrid. Brentford’s Igor Thiago has also been included for the first time, reflecting the coach’s willingness to integrate young talent alongside established stars. The attacking line is anchored by Raphinha and Vinícius Júnior, supported by João Pedro and Matheus Cunha, while veteran Casemiro provides experience in midfield.
Ancelotti emphasized the importance of arriving at the World Cup in peak condition both technically and physically, praising players performing well in their club leagues. Discussions about extending his contract through the 2030 World Cup were also highlighted, signaling continuity and long-term planning for Brazil’s national team. The coach remains confident in his squad’s preparation despite Neymar’s temporary setback.
Brazil will open their World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 13, followed by matches against Scotland and Haiti in Group C. The 26-man squad features a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talents across all positions, ensuring depth and versatility. Goalkeepers include Alisson, Bento, and Éderson, while defenders, midfielders, and forwards are carefully balanced to maximize tactical options for the tournament.
