Administrative Hurdles Put Indonesian National Team Players on Hold in Dutch Football

Several Indonesian national team players competing in the Dutch leagues have been temporarily sidelined due to complications related to their passport and citizenship status. Reports from Dutch media indicate that clubs are taking precautionary measures while waiting for clarity on the players' legal standing. This situation has affected multiple athletes across different teams and divisions.

Among those impacted are Dean James, Justin Hubner, and Nathan Tjoe-A-On, who have been unable to participate in training or matches for their respective clubs. Dean James has been excluded from activities at Go Ahead Eagles, while Hubner, who plays for Fortuna Sittard, and Nathan, representing Willem II, are also currently inactive. Similar measures have been taken for Tim Geypens at FC Emmen, highlighting that the issue is not isolated to a single club.

The root of the problem is linked to concerns over dual citizenship and player classification within European football regulations. Clubs are reportedly cautious because players who hold or acquire non-European Union status are subject to stricter requirements, including work permits and minimum salary thresholds.
