Asia Cup 2027 Draw: Where Does Indonesia Stand?

The Asia Cup 2027, set to be hosted in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2026, has nearly finalized its participants, with 23 out of 24 teams confirmed. The remaining slot is undecided due to the postponed match between Lebanon and Yemen, which will now take place in Qatar in June 2026 because of ongoing conflict. Despite the delay, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has already assigned teams to their respective draw pots, as the winner of that match will join Pot 4.

Indonesia, currently ranked 121st in the world, finds itself in Pot 4 for the upcoming draw. This grouping also includes Kyrgyzstan, the winner of Lebanon/Yemen, North Korea, Kuwait, and Singapore. Being in the same pot means Indonesia cannot be drawn into a group with any of these nations.

Being in Pot 4 increases the likelihood of Indonesia facing a so-called "group of death," where they could encounter some of the continent's strongest teams. Possible matchups could include facing top-seeded teams like Japan, Iran, or South Korea, alongside Pot 2 and Pot 3 nations such as Iraq, Bahrain, China, or Jordan. These challenging combinations could make Indonesia's path in the tournament particularly tough.

The initial plan was to hold the Asia Cup 2027 draw in Riyadh on April 11, 2026. However, due to escalating political tensions in the Middle East, the draw has been postponed indefinitely. AFC officials are yet to announce a new date, leaving teams and fans waiting to see the official group formations.

The confirmed pots reflect the tournament's competitive landscape: Pot 1 includes Saudi Arabia, Japan, Iran, South Korea, Australia, and Uzbekistan; Pot 2 features Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, UAE, Oman, and Syria; Pot 3 consists of Bahrain, Thailand, China, Palestine, Vietnam, and Tajikistan; and Pot 4 contains Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon/Yemen, North Korea, Indonesia, Kuwait, and Singapore. Indonesia's placement in Pot 4 makes its route challenging, with potential encounters against Asia's football powerhouses.
