Team News
Bologna are in excellent shape heading into this UEFA Europa League knockout play-off second leg, sitting comfortably in the top four of Serie A with one of the league’s most solid defensive records. They hold a narrow advantage after a hard-fought first-leg draw at Villa Park and will be highly motivated in front of their own fans at the Renato Dall’Ara. No major new injury concerns: key midfielder Remo Freuler is fit again, while forwards Santiago Castro and Dan Ndoye are both available and in good form. Expect Vincenzo Italiano to deploy a compact yet dangerous 4-2-3-1 with Łukasz Skorupski in goal, a back four featuring Stefan Posch and Charalampos Lykogiannis, midfield anchored by Freuler and Lewis Ferguson, and attack led by Castro, Ndoye and Riccardo Orsolini. Bologna will press aggressively, stay organised in midfield and look to exploit quick counters and set pieces.

Aston Villa travel knowing they must score at least once without reply to force extra time (or two to win outright). They sit inside the Premier League top four with a potent attacking unit but have shown occasional defensive vulnerabilities away from home in Europe. No significant new injury issues: Ollie Watkins is fit and remains their biggest goal threat, while midfielders Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana provide control. Expect Unai Emery to field a balanced 4-2-3-1 with Emiliano Martínez in goal, a back four featuring Ezri Konsa and Diego Carlos, midfield anchored by Tielemans and Onana, and attack led by Watkins, supported by Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby or Jhon Durán. Villa will aim to stay compact, absorb pressure and hit on quick counters through Bailey’s pace and Watkins’ finishing.

Head to Head Analysis
This is only the second competitive meeting between the clubs. The first leg at Villa Park finished 1-1 in a very tight, tactical game – both teams scored once, with Bologna showing great counter-attacking threat and Villa dominating large spells without converting enough chances. Historically the fixture is brand new, but Bologna have an excellent recent record against English sides at home (unbeaten in their last four European home games vs Premier League opposition, scoring in every one). Matches involving Bologna at home tend to be high-intensity and goal-filled when they push forward (over 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 home European games), while Villa have struggled to keep clean sheets away against aggressive pressing teams. Expect another end-to-end contest – Bologna will chase the game early, while Villa are dangerous on the break and from set pieces.

Prediction
The Renato Dall’Ara will be a cauldron and Bologna’s home intensity, high pressing and counter-attacking quality give them a real chance to extend the aggregate lead early. They are perfectly suited to punish any mistakes from Villa’s high defensive line, and their front line (Castro, Ndoye, Orsolini) has the pace and finishing to create big chances. Villa have plenty of quality to hurt on the counter (Bailey pace, Watkins finishing), but their poor away defensive record in knockout ties and the need to chase the game expose them to Bologna’s pressure. This should be an open, high-tempo clash with chances at both ends – Bologna likely to score first and force Villa to open up, leading to a high-scoring affair. Very tight tie, but the home advantage and current momentum tip it to the Italians.

Final Prediction: Bologna win 2-1 (aggregate 3-2). Home side to progress – around 60% confidence in a Bologna victory on the night, with both teams to score and over 2.5 goals very likely.
