Indonesia Eyes New Firepower as Vickery and Zandbergen Near National Team Switch
Positive developments are emerging for Indonesia national team as two overseas-based players, Luke Vickery and Dean Zandbergen, are reportedly close to completing their naturalization process to strengthen the squad’s attacking options.
The move reflects a growing urgency from PSSI to address long-standing issues in the forward line. For years, the team has struggled to find a consistent goal scorer, and bringing in young, versatile strikers is seen as a practical solution to improve overall attacking output.
This effort comes at a crucial time, with several important tournaments on the horizon, including the June FIFA matchday schedule and the upcoming ASEAN competition later in the year. A more reliable attacking unit is considered essential if Indonesia aims to compete more effectively on the international stage.
Previous coaching eras under Shin Tae-yong, Patrick Kluivert, and now John Herdman have all faced similar challenges in resolving the lack of a true number nine. Current options such as Ramadhan Sananta and Ole Romeny have yet to fully deliver in that role, with Romeny often proving more effective in a deeper playmaking position.
Vickery, who plays for Macarthur FC, and Zandbergen of VVV Venlo, are both viewed as promising additions who could bring fresh energy and new tactical possibilities. If the process is finalized, Indonesia would gain greater flexibility in attack, potentially unlocking a more balanced and competitive setup moving forward.
