FIFA Considered Extra Playoff Scenario for World Cup 2026, But Indonesia's Chances Remain Slim

Reports from Spanish journalist Luiz Carlos Largo suggest that FIFA could be exploring the possibility of organizing an additional playoff tournament for the 2026 World Cup if Iran were ultimately removed from the competition. The idea has sparked widespread discussion, particularly regarding which teams might be involved and how replacements would be selected.

The proposed format would reportedly involve four teams, consisting of two representatives from Europe and two from Asia. This contingency plan is said to be under consideration due to ongoing geopolitical tensions that could potentially affect Iran's participation in the tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The situation surrounding Iran remains uncertain as external conflicts continue to raise concerns about their eligibility and ability to compete. If they were forced to withdraw, FIFA would need to determine suitable replacements, with speculation pointing toward a playoff system to decide the final participant.

While the possibility of Asian representation in such a playoff exists, teams like the United Arab Emirates and Oman appear to be ahead in the hierarchy based on their performance in the qualification stages. Both nations advanced further than Indonesia in the Asian qualifiers, strengthening their position in any potential selection process.

As a result, despite ongoing speculation about expanded opportunities, Indonesia's chances of participating in this hypothetical playoff remain very limited. Their earlier exit in the qualification round places them behind other regional contenders, making involvement in any additional qualifying pathway highly unlikely.
