Indonesia's Slim Chances: Why They Could Miss a Potential 2026 World Cup Extra Playoff
The possibility of an additional playoff for the 2026 World Cup has recently sparked discussion, especially following reports that FIFA may organize such a match if Iran withdraws from the tournament. According to emerging speculation, this extra playoff would involve four teams, with two coming from Europe and two representing Asia. This scenario has naturally raised questions about whether Indonesia could benefit from such an opportunity.
From the European side, Italy and Denmark are seen as the most likely candidates to fill the available slots. Both teams have strong FIFA rankings and delivered solid performances during the European qualifiers, despite ultimately falling short of direct qualification. Their consistency and competitive record make them favorable choices compared to other European teams that did not qualify.
In Asia, the situation is more competitive. The United Arab Emirates and Oman appear to be leading contenders for the potential playoff spots. Their FIFA rankings are significantly higher than Indonesia's, and both teams showed stronger performances throughout the qualification stages. The UAE advanced deeper into the qualification rounds, while Oman managed to secure points in a stage where Indonesia failed to register any.
Indonesia, by comparison, faces a much tougher path. With a lower FIFA ranking and less convincing results during the qualifiers, the team is at a clear disadvantage. Their inability to secure points in crucial matches has weakened their position relative to other Asian teams competing for a possible playoff opportunity.
If the additional playoff does take place, Indonesia risks becoming the only team from the fourth round of Asian qualification that neither qualifies directly nor earns a spot in the playoff. Meanwhile, other teams from the same stage have either already secured their place in the World Cup or remain in stronger contention for the extra qualification route, leaving Indonesia on the outside looking in.
